With great sadness we at The Vaulting Review found out of the passing of Julie Newell, long time lunger of Team Great Britain. Our thoughts go to her family, friends, pupils and the English equestrian federation for the great loss.
We never personally met Mrs Newell, just wrote to her a few emails, but we always loved to think of her as a friend, nonetheless. We followed with sympathy her team, the English Vaulting Team EVT, that represented so many times the UK in international competitions. We also chose one of their pictures to introduce our magazine to the vaulting world in 2018. We don’t even have that many photos of Julie’s, since (rightly or wrongly) during the competitions we focus most on the performances of vaulters and horses. But who is part of this world knows the great importance that holds the figure of the lunger.
We have a beautiful song in Italian, titled “Una vita da mediano” by Luciano Ligabue, which tells the story of a football player, one of those who do not score many goals, always on the sidelines, but one of those who ensure the teammates can score. That’s how we feel about all our lungers, and Julie Newell wasn’t any less than that.
We want to remember her with a few pictures of her vaulters, with the achievements she had in her carrier, and we are sure that she will not be forgotten.
